Artists' remuneration

Awards: Government honours for artists

In July 2012, IFACCA sought the assistance of its members in providing information on what types of government awards exist for artists, and how they are administered. This followed a query received from Roisín McDonough, the Chief Executive of the Arts Council of Northern Ireland, regarding government honour systems for artists.

Copyright management systems

D’Art report number 3 that reviews copyright agencies and systems in the USA, Australia, the UK, Ireland, Canada, and internationally.

Creative Intersections: Partnerships between the arts, culture and other sectors

D'Art No. 41, Creative Intersections: Partnerships between the arts, culture and other sectors represents one of the first attempts to research and analyse creative intersections, their forms and structures and the policies that influence them.

Cultural Planning: Toolkits for local cultural planning and provision

Research on local and regional cultural planning toolkits and research, reports or evaluations on the development, management and use of such toolkits.

Ecological sustainability

D'Art report 34. Good practice in supporting artists or arts organisations with creative and practical responses to ecological concerns such as environmental sustainability and climate change.

Education: Global research compendium on the impact of the arts in education

The development and publication of 'The Wow Factor: Global research compendium on the impact of the arts in education' and related resources.

Festivals: Assistance to Arts and Culture Festivals

National agency approaches to the support of arts and culture festivals. Includes D'Art report 21 (in English and Spanish).

Global financial crisis and recession: impact on the arts

Research on the likely impacts that the global economic and financial downturn will have on the arts, and policy responses to the downturn.

D'Art report 39. This report was based on a survey designed to map views and collect cases of good practice on the (potential) role of intercultural dialogue in the arts and arts policies

International arts activity

Supporting the international activities of artists and arts organisations is a key function for many national arts funding agencies.

International cultural exchange and networking

Networking is about organisations and individuals joining forces and/or building relationships with other organisations and individuals to share knowledge, ‘products’ and experiences and to learn from each other with a common goal in mind [adapted from Networking for learning, ICCO, April 2004]. 

Major performing arts organisations: a review of the issues for funding agencies

Issues and best practice in the support of large, national, or major performing arts organisations.

Multidisciplinary arts: approaches to funding

The report looks at definitions of multidisciplinary arts, assessment procedures, and resources allocated to supporting the discipline.

Musical instrument banks: online materials

D'Art Report number 8 surveys programs that lend musical instruments such as instrument banks, libraries and loan schemes.

New media arts policy and practice

 Identification of policy issues and key personnel.

Philanthropy: Encouraging arts philanthropy: selected resources

This report presents the interim results from IFACCA’s seventh D'Art question on how governments encourage greater philanthropy for the charitable sector through enhanced income tax provisions.

Radio: Regulation of radio music

Research into how common regulation concerning origin and language is, and if there are other cultural policy goals apart from those connected to a language policy.

Regeneration: Arts and culture in regeneration

D'Art report number 25 is an international review that explores the art/culture and regeneration nexus across three key areas of policy interest.

Residencies: International Perspectives on Artist Residencies

There appears to be a worldwide interest in artist residencies, and many government agencies are involved in supporting residency programs and/or the artists that take part in them.

Rural: Cultural development in rural and remote regions

D'Art report number 23 provides an audit of research and information on cultural development in rural and remote areas.

Trends: New Directions in Cultural Policy

How globalisation, shifts in social and economic development, and new forms of communication are generating an array of challenges and opportunities within the cultural field, and on how this is impacting on the development of our societies and nations.

Venues: Performing arts venues infrastructure policies

Research on optimal provision levels of performing arts venues and facilities.

Visual Arts: National visual arts and craft sector associations

An international survey of national non-government organisations that focus on policy development and service provision for visual artists and craftspeople and the industries they operate in. D'Art report number 29.

Grant assessment timeframes

This report analyses the length of time it takes for arts funding agencies to complete a grants giving process. D'Art report number 35.

Heritage: Defining intangible cultural heritage

The Scottish Arts Council and the Scottish Museums Council have commissioned Professor Alistair McCleery to undertake a preliminary study of the issues, both theoretical and practical, in making an inventory of intangible cultural heritage (ICH) in Scotland.

Independence of government arts funding: a review

The paper provides background to the issue of independence of arts support.

UNESCO Convention on cultural diversity

The Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions, adopted by UNESCO in October 2005, entered into force in March 2007. The Convention seeks to strengthen the five inseparable links of the same chain: creation, production, distribution/dissemination, access and enjoyment of cultural expressions, as conveyed by cultural activities, goods and services

Government arts expenditure: inter-country comparisons

D'Art report 13. This interim report provides a brief introduction to issues involved in making cross-country comparisons of government expenditures on arts and culture.

After looking at cultural statistics programs internationally, D'Art Report number 7 reviews seven cross-country comparisons of cultural participation data.

Statistical indicators for arts policy

A discussion paper (D'Art report number 18) that identifies current global resources and work being undertaken to develop cultural indicators and provides a literature review on the topic.
