Mexico City, August 11, 2026. The Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation of Mexico (SCJN) signed the Collaboration Framework Agreement, “For the Defense and Promotion of the Electoral Rights of Indigenous Peoples and Communities and Afro-Mexican Peoples and Communities,” together with the Judicial Administration Body (OAJ), the Electoral Tribunal of the Federal Judiciary (TEPJF), the National Electoral Institute (INE), the National Institute of Indigenous Peoples (INPI), and the National Institute of Indigenous Languages (INALI).
This agreement promotes the development of initiatives aimed at strengthening Indigenous and Afro-Mexican peoples’ and communities’ access to the full exercise of their political and electoral rights, as well as access to electoral justice, through an intercultural and intersectional approach.
At the event, Hugo Aguilar Ortiz, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN), stated that: “A right that is not understood cannot be exercised or made a reality. [...] That is why we are working to translate laws and legal texts so that those seeking justice can access their contents in their own languages.”
He explained that: “Justice must also be multicultural. Based on this principle, we can no longer maintain that there is only one source of law: the State. [...] The same can be said regarding the exercise of government. We can no longer assume that a single form of government can govern a homogeneous population. Government must be capable of governing diversity and plurality.”
