Emilie Gardberg appointed Director General of the Arts and Culture Department

The Government has appointed Master of Arts Emilie Gardberg to the post of Director General of the Finnish Arts and Culture Department, who will start in January. The term of office of the Director-General is five years.

Gardberg has previously served as Dean of the Sibelius Academy, Director of the Finnish Institute in London, Director of the Turku Philharmonic Orchestra and Executive Director of the Turku Music Festival. Gardberg holds a Master of Arts degree from Columbia University in New York.

The Director-General's task is to manage, develop and supervise the activities of the Arts and Culture Department, and to be responsible for the effectiveness of its operations and the achievement of its objectives.

The Arts and Culture Department is an agency within the administrative branch of the Ministry of Education and Culture, which operates in tasks related to the promotion of arts and culture, media education and a safe media environment, as well as the archiving and promotion of knowledge of audiovisual culture. The new Arts and Culture Department will be formed when the Arts Promotion Centre Finland (Taike) and the National Audiovisual Institute (KAVI) merge at the turn of the year. The Arts and Culture Council operates in connection with the Agency.
