Cultural Statistics Yearbook 2010
Available from today on the web www.mcu.es The Ministry of Culture has developed the Cultural Statistics Yearbook 2010, alongside the Statistics Division of the Technical Secretariat. This is the sixth edition of this work, which includes a selection of the most significant statistical results in the cultural field, from various sources. It aims to facilitate knowledge of the situation and development of culture in Spain, its social value and its character as a source of wealth.
The information in this edition of the Yearbook of Cultural Statistics has been incorporated into CULTURAbase, the statistical database available on the website of the Ministry of Culture.
The Yearbook is divided into three blocks. The first includes estimates that affect different sectors of culture, employment and enterprise, public and private financing, intellectual property, foreign trade, tourism, education and cultural habits. In the second, it provides information by specific sector: heritage, museums, archives, libraries, books, arts, music, film and video.
Results of the Satellite Account of Culture
The third section includes a preview of the results of the Satellite Account of Culture, a statistical operation prepared by the Ministry of Culture. Their results show the significant weight both in activities related to intellectual property and cultural activities within the Spanish economy.
The preliminary results of the Satellite Account shows that in 2008 the cultural sector's contribution to Spanish GDP stood at 2.9%, rising to 3.7% if all economic activities relating to intellectual property are included.
By cultural sectors, the statistics highlight the Book and publishing sector with a total GDP contribution of 1.1%, representing 38.5% in all activities. Followed by, in order of importance, the areas of radio and television (16.8%), and Film and video (10.7%). The remaining sectors have a stake of less than 10%: Visual Arts (9.7%), Performing Arts (5.5%), Heritage (4.0%), archives and libraries (2.0%) and recorded music ( 2.0%).
In the set of activities involving intellectual property it should be noted that 69.2% corresponds to the arts and 30.8% remain in advertising and information technology.
MOST SIGNIFICANT DATA FROM THE YEARBOOK
Cultural employment
The volume of people employed in 2009 in the cultural sector amounted to 544.8 thousand, representing 2.9% of total employment in Spain. In annual terms, this represents a decrease of 5.8%, slightly lower than in the same period for the national average of 7.2%. The most significant differences between the jobs linked to culture recorded and total employed by educational attainment, with higher education being attained by half - with significantly higher rates of part-time employment 20.2% in 2009.
The data is drawn from a specific use of the Labour Force Survey (INE), conducted for the Ministry of Culture.
Cultural industries
The Yearbook includes first information relating to cultural enterprises in certain activities of trade and rental, which along with the cultural enterprises in industry activities and services, representing a total of 102,945 companies in early 2009, 3.1% the total of companies in the Central Business Directory prepared by the National Statistics Institute (INE).
Financing and Public Spending on Culture
According to the latest results of Finance Statistics and Public Spending on Culture, developed by the Ministry of Culture in collaboration with the Autonomous Communities, in 2008, spending on culture settled by the Central Government stood at 1,075 million euros, Regional Administration 2.129 million and in Local Government in 3.907 million. These figures represent in terms of GDP (base 2000) 0.10%, 0.20% and 0.36% respectively.
Household consumption
According to Family Expenditure Survey Base 2006 (INE) household spending on cultural goods and services rose in 2008 to 16,694.6 million euros, up 0.5% over 2007 and accounts for 3.1% of expenditure on total goods and services. The average expenditure per household in cultural goods and services was EUR 997.2 a decrease over 2007 of 2.3% and the average spending per person amounted to EUR 368.3 a decrease from 2007 of 1, 1%.
The most significant components of expenditure on culture and its evolution are: Books and periodicals (19.4%), cultural services (29.1%) and audiovisual equipment and Internet (43.3%).
The average expenditure per household drops to reduce the size of the town takes its maximum value in municipalities with more than 100,000. Is above average in the regions of Asturias, the Balearic Islands, Catalonia, Madrid and Navarra.
Cultural products prices
For the second consecutive year, the yearbook contains indicators on the evolution of prices of certain products related to culture statistics obtained from the Consumer Price Index Base 2006 (INE).
Intellectual Property
The total amount raised by all management entities of intellectual property rights in 2009 amounted to 457 million euros, up 13% from the previous year, breaking the rise observed in the period 2000-2008.
Foreign trade
As regards foreign trade data of cultural property originating from a particular operation of the Foreign Trade Statistics, prepared by the State Agency for Tax Administration, highlighted in 2009, as in other cases, the positive performance of books and newspapers, with exports amounting to 555.9 million euros and a positive trade balance of 173.5 million.
In 2009, exports of goods linked to culture stood at 835.5 million, compared to some imports of 871.7 million euros, figures represent declines of 7.1% and 17.1% respectively compared to previous year.
Cultural Tourism
The results of a particular operation conducted for the Ministry of Culture of the three statistical operations developed by the Institute of Tourism Studies provide indicators of the importance of the cultural sector as an engine of other economically important sectors such as tourism. According to these sources, 13.7% of trips made by residents in Spain in 2009 for leisure, recreation or vacation was initiated mainly for cultural reasons, namely 12.7 million trips. In this there are international tourist arrivals are carried out mainly for cultural reasons, 5.7 million in 2009, a figure which represents 13.5% of total trips made for leisure, recreation or vacation of this group.
The above information is supplemented by indicators of travel in which cultural activity is performed, whatever the primary reason for travel. The results indicate that in 2009, 48.5% of trips made by residents in Spain includes some kind of cultural activity, a figure which rises to 53.8% in the group of international tourists.
Lessons from the cultural field
In the academic year 2009/2010, more than 360,000 students enrolled in Art Education Special Regime, especially in music, which enrolled more than 80%. Students who were in the form of Arts School or Vocational studies were referred to the field of culture accounted for 4% of the students in this type of education. Those enrolled in university courses related to cultural professions amounted to 94,647 in 2008/2009.
Figures of interest
The set of real estate registered in 2009 as Assets of Cultural Interest amounted to 15,904, a figure slightly higher than in 2008, and the movable property to 7771.
Statistics of Museums and Collections, developed by the Ministry of Culture in collaboration with the Ministry of Defence, National Heritage and the autonomous communities and cities, estimates that the 1,560 museums were surveyed in 2008 slightly more than 56 million visitors, exceeding by 5.4% to that observed in 2006 by the same source.
According to the Library Statistics compiled by the INE, the number of libraries amounted in 2008 to 6,601, an average figure of 14.6 per 100,000 libraries. Each of them has, on average, 1.3 points of service. Registered users amounted to 16.3 million, of which 17.9% were children, compared to 82.1% of adults. The number of visitors to libraries in 2008 amounted to 204.4 million.
Statistical results of the Spanish edition of books with ISBN, are made according to the book definition established by Law 10/2007 of Reading, Books and Libraries, and therefore include electronic books and books published or distributed via the internet or other media that may appear in the future.
The number of books registered in the ISBN in 2009, according to this definition, was 110,205, representing an increase of 5.7% over 2008. By type of support has to be noted that 97 000, 88% of the total registered in 2009, are from books on paper and 13.2 thousand, 12%, other media. By subsector, the largest proportion of books arrived in 2009, 32.5% went on social sciences and humanities, followed by textbooks, which account for 19.1%, and creative writing, 16.4% , the area dedicated to children and adolescents, 10.9%, ranking scientists and technicians in 9.7% of total enrollment.
The number of musical works recorded in ISMN published in 2009 was of 1,114, of which 95% were first editions. The number of theatrical scenic areas stood at 1,518 in 2009, a figure that represents 3.3 per 100,000 inhabitants. All 481 rooms are a concert for 100,000 people.
As regards the cinema, according to the results of Statistics of Cinematography, in 2009, 1,481 films were shown, 33.6% of which were premieres. The total number of spectators stood at 110 million, with $ 671 million.
