Culture and sustainable development: examples of institutional innovation and proposal of a new cultural policy profile.

Culture and sustainable development: examples of institutional innovation and proposal of a new cultural policy profile. This report is the contribution of our Committee to the “new cultural policy profile” process launched by the Division of Cultural Policies and Intercultural Dialogue of UNESCO.

The report (a) suggests the new role of culture in sustainable development is about including a cultural perspective in all public policies, (b) proposes that a new cultural policy profile could be based on the argument of culture as the fourth pillar of sustainable development, (c) cherishes an effort is made by hegemonic Western cultures to discuss the meaning of the relation between culture and sustainable development, (d) embraces the cultural diversity momentum but warns about the limits of institutionality, (e) suggests that any new cultural policy profile should rely on the competences and the capacities of cities and local governments, (f) offers several examples of institutional innovation in the relation between culture and sustainable development, (g) insists the new cultural policy profile is based on the argument of the fourth pillar, and it gives ten reasons, and (h) draws the new cultural policy profile with five main chapters and twenty-one policy domains.

The Spanish Development Cooperation Agency, the AECID, has firmly supported the drawing up this report. Should you require any further information, please don’t hesitate to contact the secretariat of the committee: agenda21cultura@bcn.cat or +34 933 161 009.
