CultureWork: The mid-career arts and culture professional

A two-part instalment of CultureWork by Victoria J. Saunders that explores what it means to be a mid-career arts and culture professional today.

In the first issues (December 2007), Saunders explores the under-acknowledged, sometimes seemingly invisible, mid-career arts managers. Spanning the Baby Boom and Generation X populations, mid-career managers find themselves balancing the stresses of middle management careers with their high level of commitment to arts and culture. She introduces this group of professionals and the ways in which they define themselves at this stage of their careers.

In the second issue (March 2008) Saunders completes her analysis of feedback received from surveyed arts and culture professionals working at a stage in their lives in which they feel both committed to the cause of moving the arts forward in society yet stuck in a static career. Saunders then addresses possible solutions for mid-career burnout including rejuvenation and renewal through career development, professional coaching, and sabbaticals.
