New Zealanders and the arts
Creative New Zealand, the country's national arts council, commissioned a national study on the attitudes of the public towards art. The report looked at the attendance of and participation in the arts. New Zealanders and the arts: Ngā iwi katoa ō Aotearoa me ngā mahi toi revealed that 74% of New Zealanders aged 15 or over said they believed the arts contributed positively to the economy; 76% believe that the arts define New Zealanders, and 77% believe the arts should receive public funding. Some 84% of New Zealanders attended at least one arts event in the past year, and 32% attended an arts event at least once a month. Around 35% attended at least one Maori event in the previous year, with 16% involved in Maori arts. Maori art attendance has increased the most.
