Arts Council England Peer Review
The report of an independent review of Arts Council England, commissioned jointly by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport and the Arts Council, has been published. This is the second Peer Review of DCMS sponsored bodies, following on from the review of the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council in 2004.The Peer Review team, chaired by Baroness McIntosh of Hudnall, considered what the Arts Council delivered, its impact and effectiveness and the success of its partnerships. The Peer Review team praised the role of the Arts Council in placing the arts more centrally in national life than ever before. It gave clear backing for the continuation of the Arts Council as an independent arm’s length agency, praised the success of the recent restructuring and singled out key reforms, such as the introduction of the new streamlined Grants for the Arts programme. The Review makes a number of recommendations about how the Arts Council can build further on its successes by establishing a more strategic relationship with DCMS, by speaking with more confidence on matters of relevance to the arts and by completing its reforms by reviewing the role and structure of its national office.
