Diversity in Canada's Arts Labour Force

The newly released Diversity in Canada's Arts Labour Force is an examination of visible minority, Aboriginal and immigrant artists in Canada and the provinces based on the 2001 census. The study complements recent reports in the Statistical Insights on the Arts series (entitled A Statistical Profile of Artists in Canada and Artists in Canada’s Provinces, Territories and Metropolitan Areas). It has been prepared by Ontario Arts Research group, Hill Strategies Inc., and is funded by the Canada Council for the Arts, the Department of Canadian Heritage and the Ontario Arts Council. Key findings of the report include:

  • Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver are home to about 75 per cent of all visible minority and immigrant artists;
  • Most aboriginal artists practice visual art or crafts;
  • Immigrant artists are most commonly performers, artisans or writers;
  • In 1991, immigrant artists earned more than the average for all artists. In 2001, immigrants now earn less on average than those who came to Canada prior to the 1990s.
