Expressing Themselves: Youth Consultation

The findings of a 2004 study on young people and the arts in Scotland are now available online. The study, an analysis of young people’s views on arts and culture in Scotland and how the arts should be delivered to them in the future, was conducted by Young Scot on behalf of the Scottish Arts Council between July and November 2004. The consultation collected the views of over 1200 young people across Scotland using a range of consultation methods. The results clearly show that ‘the arts’ is an issue that young people feel strongly about. The report, Expressing Themselves: Youth Consultation, details the outcomes of the consultation, and includes feedback from a selection of young participants. Among the key findings were:

  • The majority of young people in Scotland believe the arts are creative and fun;
  • The vast majority of young people in Scotland take part in or attend arts activities;
  • There are a number of complex factors influencing young people’s decision not to take part in arts activities; and
