Mitchell review welcomed by Council
The Chair of the Australia Council for the Arts, James Strong AO, today welcomed the appointment of well-known business leader and philanthropist Harold Mitchell AC to lead a review of private sector support for the arts in Australia.
The review, announced by the Federal Arts Minister Simon Crean, will report on current Australian Government arrangements for encouraging private sector support for the arts, consider potential new models for encouraging private sector support and develop policy options in the context of the National Cultural Policy.
“The Australia Council welcomes this review into private sector support for the arts in Australia and the appointment of Harold Mitchell to chair the review” said James Strong.
“Corporate and philanthropic support for artistic practice is an increasingly vital source of support for Australia’s artists and arts organisations.”
“Harold Mitchell is a role model for private support for the arts; a recognised arts leader, a generous benefactor, an energetic fundraiser and outstanding advocate for the arts. Harold’s experience and personal contribution to growing corporate and philanthropic support for the arts will be of great value to this important review.”
“Harold chairs the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and Art Exhibitions Australia and also served as President of the National Gallery of Australia, the Museums Board of Victoria and the Melbourne International Arts Festival. His own philanthropic endeavour, the Harold Mitchell Foundation, has for more than a decade distributed considerable funds to art and health projects.”
“I welcome the national profile and strategic overview which Harold will bring to this review,” says James Strong.
The review is due to report to the Arts Minister in late October.
