Planning for success

The Australia Council for the Arts has spent the past few months interviewing Indigenous performers and arts organisations, including members of the theatre and dance boards, about how it can to help the Indigenous performing arts sector reach its full potential.

After great discussion and debate, the Australia Council's Market Development section has now released an Indigenous Market Development Strategy based on four key areas of activity (from 2010 to 2016). They are:

skills development through strategic mentorships with benchmark organisations experienced in touring Indigenous performing arts
capacity building through resourcing artists and organisations with planning tools for market development and marketing
growing infrastructure by establishing a national Indigenous touring consortium
increasing demand by developing a contextualised base for international and national buyers, supporting them to view works ‘live’ at key Indigenous festivals.
Merindah Donnelly, Indigenous Program Officer, Market Development, says: ‘The strategy builds on the growing contemporary Indigenous performing arts scene. It mobilises people and creates pathways to new opportunities for the next generation of producers, directors, actors, playwrights, dancers and choreographers.’

A tender for three host organisations to mentor three emerging Indigenous performing arts producers full-time over a period of 18 months has recently gone out. Host organisations will be selected for their capacity, ability and demonstrated commitment to train an Indigenous producer. An amount of $75,000 per mentorship is available to each host organisation.
