Arts Council completes mid-term strategy review

Three years on from the launch of its five-year strategy, Creative Connections, the Arts Council of Northern Ireland has spoken to key stakeholders to assess the impact of work undertaken so far.
When it was launched in January 2007, Creative Connections outlined a new frame work that the Arts Council would use to achieve its vision to ‘place art at the heart of our social, creative and economic life’. The five-year plan detailed four key themes; to promote the value of the arts; strengthen the arts; increase audiences and improve the organisation’s performance.
At the beginning of this year Arts Council clients were invited to contribute to the mid-term review through a series of focus groups and the Client Satisfaction Survey. The research highlighted many achievements to date as well as a number of areas still in need of development.
Among major achievements noted were the development of an online digital archive which reflects artists’ response to The Troubles; the success of the Creative Industries Innovation Fund; and the realisation of a long-term ambition to provide a dedicated arts facility within 20 miles of every person living in Northern Ireland.
Clients indicated that they would like to see the Arts Council focus more on certain areas, such as promoting the arts from Northern Ireland on an international scale and providing more guidance to organisations and artists about raising funds from other sources.
In the 2010 Client Satisfaction Survey, 81% of clients said they were satisfied/very satisfied with the Arts Council’s performance in improving the recognition of the contribution that artists and arts organisations make to society; and 86% said they were satisfied/very satisfied with the Arts Council’s work to expand opportunities for people to engage with the arts.
The results of the mid-term review will now be used to inform the Arts Council’s work over the next two years, ensuring that the strategy meets the aims and objectives that it originally set out to achieve.
