The Culture department will intensify support to popular expressions in 2010

The Ministry of Culture this year will intensify its support for traditional forms of popular folklore.
About a dozen festivals and fiestas, linked to expressions of national identity, will receive funding and support from the institution, according to the Secretary of State for Culture, José Rafael Lantigua.

The Support Coordinator Folk and Popular Party, headed by renowned folklorist Eddys Sanchez, will be responsible for the program of support for these expressions fundamentally of popular religious expressions.

The actions planned to be supported are: the Feast of Our Lady of Altagracia in Higuey, in the month of January and the traditional parade of the Commonwealth of The Mercedes, La Victoria, in Santo Domingo Norte, in February.

Similarly, the Feast of St. Joseph in Pedro Santana, and the Eurovision Sarandunga and Paleros of Mandinga, in March.

In April, the Festival will support Dolorita in Villa Mella, and the Feast of Ga-ga for La Romana and Palavé.

In May, it shall be the Feast of the Holy Cross, Bani, and representation of street theater and The Wild Bull of the guloyas Indians of San Pedro de Macoris, to be held in Angelina and Consuelo.

The Feast of sarandunga, Bani, the Festival of the Brothers Guillen in Yamasa, and the Feast of San Antonio in Najayo be held, with backing from the SEC, in June, while in July shall be the Feast of St. James, also from Bani, and Santa Ana in San Cristobal.

In August, the Gift of the Bulls in Higuey and the feast of Santo Cristo de Bayaguana.

In September, the National District Folk Festival, the Festival de Doña Tatica in The Dark, and the Feast of San Miguel in Nigua.

In October, celebration of the harvest festival of Samana, in November, the Festival of Sainaguá Atabales, and in December, Good Morning Guavaberry Festival in San Pedro de Macoris, and the feast of The Pure and Clean in Mendoza.

In all, 22 folk and popular religious events will be supported by the SEC this year.
