Perspectives on participation
Perspectives is the place where the challenges facing the new organisation Creative Scotland can be discussed, contrasted and compared. Perspectives is presenting and debating provocative ideas about realising Scotland’s cultural potential.
Over the last month, ideas around the creative practitioner and theme of accessibility have been discussed, contrasted, compared and challenged on Creative Scotland’s first online discussion forum with provocations essays from Alice Taylor and Hans Abbing.
We’re now just over half way through our four themes, each of which addresses one of Creative Scotland’s four priorities: creative practitioners, accessibility, participation and international activity. The latest piece by Diane Ragsdale, focuses on the theme of Participation, with a provocative piece on encouraging, sustaining and developing participation. Diane’s challenging essay has provoked a number of comments including the view that barriers to participation can be physical, financial, emotional and attitudinal which can translate into discrimination.
Perspectives offers a space to propose your own ideas and a library stocked with inspiration – We’ve included a range of information about ‘participation’: will it change your view on how we think about ‘participation’ in the future and how we ensure that as many people as possible can participate in creative activities?
Diane’s piece will run alongside the current Creative Practitioner and Accessibility themes and will be shortly joined by the final theme, International which launches on 16 November. Git Scheynius Stockholm International Film Festival Director Git Scheynius launches the ‘International’ theme with a provocation piece titled “Time for Quality Film to Go Global’. This piece will stimulate discussion around exploring art and culture to reflect on our own place and Scotland’s place in the world.
