Avignon Forum – Signing of a three-year convention with the State

At the service of cultural diversity. The first Avignon Forum was organised in 2008, as part of the French Presidency of the European Union. One of the principal objectives of the annual meeting is to show what cultural investment contributes, not only to the protection of diversity and the defence of civilisation’s values, but also for the creation of people’s wealth, and for a better understanding of the values of a country for visitors such as immigrants.
The Convention on the protection and promotion of the diversity of cultural expressions was adopted on 20 October 2005 at UNESCO. France, along with Canada, played an essential role in its adoption.
Christine Albanel, together with Nicolas Seydoux, president of the Gaumont supervision council and President of the association ‘Avignon Forum, culture, media, economy’ have signed a three-year convention between the State and the association, with a view to organising the next Avignon Forum.
2008 Forum. The first Avignon Forum was held on 16 to 18 November 2008 on the theme ‘Culture, factor in economic expansion’. It gathered together 250 major players from the sectors of the economy, culture and media, and also representatives of public authorities from various countries. “I intend to offer a unique meeting space to create synergies, bridges between sectors that have few opportunities to meet and to encourage the emergence of new, ambitious forms of beneficial collaboration for growth, and for cultural diversity” Christine Albanel then explained.
The first day of the Avignon Forum of 2008 was dedicated to “Culture and Economic development”: Culture, a condition of durable economic development, and creation, lever of growth.
The theme of the plenary session, opened by Christine Albanel, was “Culture, crisis and progress”
The second day’s theme was “Digitisation at the dawn of new values?”
