Arts Council urges older people to ‘jump into the arts’
The Arts Council of Northern Ireland today launched their ‘Jump into the Arts’ campaign with local music legend, Terri Hooley. Terri, who recently won a life time achievement award for his contribution to music in Northern Ireland, is lending his voice to the Arts Council Campaign to encourage older people to get involved in the Arts. The Arts Council campaign highlights a wide range of free and low cost, exciting arts events on offer to older people in Belfast.
Roisín McDonough, Chief Executive of the Arts Council said “Art has a key role to play in building confidence, skills, adding value and helping everyone to enjoy life to the full. This campaign encourages older people to become involved in the arts, whether as a participant in classes, attending performances or taking a leisurely stroll around one of our outstanding art galleries. I would encourage everyone, particularly older people, to become involved in our exciting and vibrant arts, many of which deliver very high quality while remaining free or at a low cost.”
Terri Hooley explained why he wanted to be involved saying, “Being slightly older is not a reason for the pipe and slippers so get out there and enjoy yourself! I’m still promoting music, putting on events and performing live gigs as well as running my record shop. We all know 60 is the new 40, I am living proof of that! Try some new arts, there are loads out there. Bring your friends - make some new ones! After all we don’t grow old like we used to!”
People over 60 can avail of their Translink free travel for over 60s Senior SmartPass and enjoy a free tour around the oldest library in Belfast, a leisurely stroll around an art exhibition or savour the musical talent at Queen’s University’s weekly concerts, just some of the many free arts events on offer around Belfast.
