South East celebrated the launch of the Cultural Olympiad
The Cultural Olympiad is a four-year programme that will highlight the country’s diversity by using both culture and sport to create works and events that will bring people and places together, encourage audiences to take part, involve and inspire young people, welcome the world to the 2012 Games and create a lasting legacy.
Artists and arts organisations across the South East celebrated the launch of the UK Cultural Olympiad over the weekend of 26 - 28 September.
Cultural organisations across the country kicked off the celebrations with many institutions and organisations offering the public the chance to see or take part in something which is happening as a special event, or that would normally take place behind the scenes.
Spectacular events took place across the South East and two particularly spectacular events took place in Dover and Windsor. In Dover with street arts master pyrotechnicians, The World Famous, who lit up Dover Harbour and Castle with a spectacular fire show remembering Dover’s unique place in history. Dover’s eastern harbour and Castle was animated by a magnificent pyrotechnic display, with a moody meditation on the sea, culminating in great celebration of fire - linking the sea, the harbour and the White Cliffs.

In Windsor it is a festival of light through Windsor Town Centre - a light trail from Creatmosphere, commissioned by Windsor Festival will be lit to reveal a familiar landscape and location in a new way. The lights will be switched on daily for a period of six weeks from 27th September. The project will conclude with a youth project involving local schools around the time of Diwali and Guy Fawkes' Night.
