Culture is not Idol Worshipping
| The Minister of Tourism, Culture and National Orientation, Prince Adetokunbo Kayode has said that appreciation of culture is not the idol worshipping. Prince Kayode stated this when the Committee of Catholic Bishop Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) visited him in his office to solicit government support for its first National Catholic Festival of Arts and Culture (NACAFAC 2008), holding in Abuja on the 28th and 29th of August. He emphasized that culture is life the symbol and a better identity of a people or nation, pointing out that a nation without culture is a race without values and traditions. The Minister assured the committee that his Ministry would support the festival and that the Ministry was ready to partner with the Church in promoting the nation's diversed cultures. Speaking earlier, the Chairman of the Committee of the festival, Rev. Martins Olorunmola disclosed that the purpose of the ceremony was used as vehicles to correct the negative impression about Nigerians. The Chairman who was represented by Rev. Louis pointed out that the festival was also aimed at identifying those cultural elements of Nigerian people that are not at variance with the teaching of the Church, to showcase them and consider the possibility of adapting them for worship in a uniform manner so as to bring the people closer to God. The theme of the maiden festival by the Catholic Church is: Celebrating Our Unity in Diversity through Inculturation. |
