National Council congratulates Peter Hewitt on CBE
The National Council of Arts Council England yesterday (1 July) passed a unanimous vote of congratulations to former Chief Executive Peter Hewitt on his recently awarded CBE.
Speaking after yesterday's Council meeting - the first since the announcement of the Queen's birthday honours list - Chair Christopher Frayling said "This is a very well deserved recognition of Peter's ten-year leadership of the Arts Council, at a time of radical re-structuring, of vastly increased government spending on the arts and of great art for more people than ever before. Peter played a key role in making all of this happen and we are delighted that his contribution has been so publicly acknowledged."
Responding to the vote, Peter Hewitt said: "I am pleased and proud to be awarded a CBE and I thank the Council for their kind words. The award is a tribute to the dedication of everybody I worked with - in and out of the Arts Council - over the last fifteen, fantastic years for the arts."
Chief Executive Alan Davey echoed the National Council's congratulations, saying: "Under Peter's leadership, government funding of the arts doubled and almost £2 billion has been invested in creating new arts facilities up and down the country. He reshaped the organisation and left me a strong foundation on which to continue to build an Arts Council with art at its heart, which can lead the debates on the arts in this country in the years to come."
