Made in England - Exploring England through art

Launching on St. George’s Day, 23rd April, Made in England is a new national partnership between BBC English Regions and Arts Council England that will explore our country through its people and its art.

Made in England is a contemporary look at the England we know today - the influence of the urban; the changing and diverse population.

Made in England launches with seven regional TV documentaries. Each one features a well-known artist, with a strong regional identity, who embarks on a journey of discovery away from his or her usual locality. Artists include landscape photographer Harry Cory Wright and jazz saxophonist Courtney Pine.

The documentaries will be broadcast on Wednesday 23rd at 10.40pm on BBC 1 or on Sky digital satellite channel 986. You will also be able to view all the films on BBC iPlayer and at bbc.co.uk/madeinengland across the following week.

The 23rd April launch also heralds a series of Made in England artists’ commissions - poems, pieces of prose and new compositions from some the leading creatives in England, including writers Beryl Bainbridge and Esther Freud and poet Dalgit Nagra. These commissions will also be available on bbc.co.uk/madeinengland, alongside BBC arts archive material.

Made In England will be supporting more arts initiatives throughout 2008 to bring artists and the public together to explore their creativity through broadcast Radio, TV and online, with content building to create an expanding creative archive. Projects could include anything from 'sound sculpture', interactive drama, poetry residencies and working creatively with BBC archives. A celebration of all the work created during the year will be held on St. George’s Day 2009.

Arts Council England and the BBC are the two biggest arts patrons in Britain and we have joined forces to deliver new cultural experiences, using different art forms, identifying new talent and exploring new ways of engaging local audiences. Made in England is the latest initiative in what is now a seven-year relationship, building on the success of our seven year long diversity initiative, Roots.
