New structure for the central administration of the Ministry of Culture and Communication

During the Council on the modernisation of public policy on 4 April, the President of the Republic, and the Prime Minister, announced that the Ministry of Culture and Communication will be organised ‘into three general departments, and a general Secretariat’.

The general structure of this new organisation has been ratified. It will be based on the creation of three general departments:

1. The department of French heritage
This department will principally group together architecture, archives and museums, as well as monumental heritage and archaeology.  It will also have responsibility for the heritage issues of cultural policy, particularly in terms of conservation, restoration, increased prestige, enrichment, and attendance policies.

2. The department of creation and promotion
This department has responsibility for plastic arts, music, dance, theatre and performing arts. It will also be responsible for support to the creation and the activities of different promotion networks.

3. The department for the development of media and the cultural economy
The third department will be composed of the current department of media development, as well as the group of ministry services relating to cultural industries, currently dispersed through different departments. In the digital age, the convergence between ‘the container and the contents’ between ‘culture and communication’ - in effect an issue common between all cultural industries, justifies their grouping.

In addition to these general departments, a general Secretariat will also be formed.
