Culture Card going digital

The Dutch Minister of Culture is introducing Cultuurkaart, a card that provides school pupils money to spend on culture.

Cultuurkaart is a digital personal card with a magnetic stripe that will be issued to 900,000 secondary school pupils with effect from the 2008-2009 school year. The Cultuurkaart will replace the CKV (Cultural and Artistic Education) vouchers that have been in use since 1999 with the aim of encouraging cultural participation among young people.

After a tendering process, companies DBF and Equens have been selected to issue and manage the card in cooperation with the Dutch European Youth Card Association (CJP), on behalf of the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science. The card will be able to be used at 'point of sale' terminals installed at cultural institutions such as museums, theatres, cinemas and specific shops.

The Cultuurkaart will be credited with €15, providing youths in the Netherlands a total of €13.5 million to spend on arts and culture.
