McDonough Rues Funding Shortfall
The Chief Executive of the Arts Council of Northern Ireland has described the organisation’s reduced funding from the National Lottery as “extremely worryingâ€. RoisÃn McDonough’s comments came as the Council distributed just under £1.5 million of lottery funds to 54 arts organisations – despite applications to the funding programme totalling over £6.5 million. “Annual income from the Lottery for arts in Northern Ireland has fallen by £2.4 million over the last decade,†said McDonough. “This has been an essential source of money for the arts, particularly in Northern Ireland where mainstream government funding has been frozen for three years at the lowest per capita rate in the United Kingdom and Ireland.†“The continuing decline of our Lottery income, now estimated to fall to £4.74 million by 2012 following the government’s recent decision that the 2012 London Olympic Games will be partially funded through Lottery proceeds, comes at a time when the arts here can least afford it.†For more information, CLICK HERE
