Government announces funding for Pro Helvetia

The Swiss government will allocate CHF135 million to Pro Helvetia for the period of 2008-2011, CHF8.8 million less than the amount Pro Helvetia had applied for. In its application to the Federal Council, Pro Helvetia's Board of Trustees had requested CHF 143.8 million in order to fulfil its basic legal mandate (CHF 125.6 million) and to boost and develop key areas of Swiss cultural life. The 2008-2011 funding statement will probably be the last of its kind according to currently applicable law, since parliament will soon be debating a new cultural promotion bill and a new Pro Helvetia bill.
