Art Bank, The Book

A new book celebrating the Canada Council’s world famous art rental scheme, Art Bank, has been unveiled. Part picture book, part analysis, Art at Work/L’Art au Travail takes readers through the 35-year history of the scheme, which has seen the world’s largest collection of contemporary Canadian art loaned out to corporate boardrooms, government offices and Canadian embassies all around the world. With a foreword by former Governor General Adrienne Clarkson, and contributions from Peggy Gale, Pierre Landry, David P. Silcox and Jeffrey M. Thomas, Art at Work was put together by Victoria Henry, director of the Canada Council Art Bank. “When it was created by the Canada Council back in 1972, the Art Bank was a uniquely Canadian vision, a means of both supporting Canadian artists and ensuring that their work could be seen and enjoyed by the public,” Ms. Henry said. “Today, 35 years later, the Art Bank’s works demonstrate the breadth, dynamism and vitality of the Canadian contemporary art scene. And the Art Bank has been a model for the creation of similar institutions by provincial governments and other countries, including South Africa.” Art at Work/L’Art au Travail is published by Goose Lane Editions.
