Inquiry into the Public Value of the Arts

Arts Council England has launched an inquiry into the public value of the arts. The wide-ranging programme of research and consultation will take place over the next six months, with findings (and the Council’s response to those findings) to be published in autumn. “I believe that by giving the public a greater voice we can achieve a greater sense of accountability in the publicly funded arts sector, one that is meaningful to the Arts Council’s own ambitions, to the individuals and organisations we fund and to wider society,” said Council Chief Executive Peter Hewitt. The first stage of the inquiry will involve a series of discussion groups with members of the public, about how, why and whether they value the arts. Key discussion points will include: • What is meant by ‘the arts’ these days? • Accessibility, barriers and motivations • Perceived benefits to individuals and society • Local, regional, national and international arts • Attitudes to funding and the role of the Arts Council • Responsibilities of artists and arts organisations that receive public money • Hopes and expectations for the future For more information, CLICK HERE
