Artists to Antarctica programme turns 10

Creative New Zealand’s Artists to Antarctica programme is celebrating its tenth anniversary. New Zealand’s artists and writers have until 15 November to apply for the programme, which covers the costs of travel to and from the ice continent (including accommodation, food, field equipment, clothing hire and transport). “Antarctica is one of the most inspiring places on the planet,” says Leo Sanson, CEO of Antarctica New Zealand, which co-manages the programme with Creative New Zealand. “It feeds the mind and soul. The chance to capture the majesty of this vast frozen continent and convey that through art is a wonderful way to communicate directly and inspire others.” “The energy and vitality the artists inject into our own environment at Scott Base each season is a highlight for many of the scientists and staff in Antarctica,” says Sanson. “Since the programme began, we have seen many varied art forms and a wide body of New Zealand Antarctic art has been created. As we approach the 50th Anniversary of Scott Base in 2007, we hope the Artists to Antarctica programme will form the backbone of a major art exhibition. The artists we choose this season will hopefully form part of that.” Poet Bernadette Hall, furniture maker/sculptor David Trubridge, children’s author Margaret Mahy and composer Gareth Farr are among the artists to make the trip in recent years.
