On Song Festival

England’s Arts Council (in association with Academy Music Group and BBC Radio 2) plan to “celebrate the art of song writing” with a series of On Song festivals. London, Birmingham, Newcastle and Liverpool are set to host the festivals between 2006-2008. Each festival will have both a performance and an education aspect. On the performance side, the festivals will celebrate each region’s musical heritage, and showcase their “finest song writers”. Focusing on the “whole process of writing, crafting and giving life to songs”, the festivals will cover “established genres such as rock and rhythm and blues, as well as newer, contemporary urban styles”. The “integrated education and emerging talent programme” – to be run with the help of national music industry bodies, higher education institutions and local arts and community organisations – will see established song writers work with emerging local talent. The festivals will also feature symposiums and workshops on song writing and broader industry issues. Launching in September 2006, artists booked to appear at this year’s festival include Ryan Adams & The Cardinals, Corinne Bailey Rae and Keisha White. For more information, CLICK HERE
