Irish Arts Sector Gets Funding Boost
Arts minister John O’ Donoghue has allocated an extra €16.4 million to the Irish arts sector. To be divided between 29 arts and cultural projects, the money will go towards refurbishment, renovation and repair works, and cover new equipment, fixtures and fittings. “Our goal is to encourage as many people as possible to participate in the arts and to also make the arts attractive to people throughout the country,” Mr O’Donoghue said. The Arts Council is the main beneficiary of the funding boost. It receives €7.5 million on top of the €72.31 million it has already been allocated this year – a 20.5 per cent increase on 2005. Ms Olive Braiden, Chair of the Arts Council, said: "We are delighted to accept this additional financial support from Minister O' Donoghue.” “From our relationships with hundreds of arts organisations, we are aware of the pressing needs that some of these organisations have for ongoing investment, whether in the form of refurbishment of the fabric of arts buildings such as theatres and artists studios or the purchase of essential equipment systems.” “We greatly welcome the Minister’s commitment to assisting the Arts Council in its work in supporting artists and arts organisations around the country."
