England’s Art Council Takes Positive Action
England’s Arts Council will resume its positive action publishing traineeship this October. Organised with the London College of Communication and publishers Serpent’s Tail, the programme addresses the publishing world’s under-representation of people with a Black African, Caribbean, Asian or Chinese background. Successful applicants get to attend the College’s year-long MA Publishing Course for free, receiving on-the-job training at Serpent’s Tail during the second academic term. They will also attend a range of external publishing courses (sponsored by the Publishing Training Centre), and be assigned a senior member of the publishing industry as an external mentor. Now in its third year, the traineeship programme has placed seven trainees in some of Britain’s most prestigious publishing houses and literary agencies, including Random House, Faber and Faber, Bloomsbury and HarperCollins. The programme forms part of a strategic initiative delivered under section 37 of the Race Relations Act (1976), and mirrors a scheme to address the under-representation of minority ethnic curators in London's museums, galleries and arts organisations.
