French to engage artists on heritage

French Minister for Culture and Communication, Renaud Donnedieu de Vabres, has announced the theme for this year's European Weekend of Heritage, and issued a call for artists to get involved. The 23rd annual heritage weekend, to be held in Paris, France, from September 16-17, 2006, will be based around the theme: "Let’s enliven our heritage". More than 12 million visitors attended the event in 2005, and more than 15,000 cultural sites opened their doors to the public. Over 20,000 individual events were programmed, including concerts, conferences, tours, and workshops. The Minister announced that 2006 celebrations will engage even more of the community. This year's activities will be centered around public places and monuments, to permit maximum participation. Everyone is encouraged to take part, especially artists and practitioners who can commemorate the event through performance or creation of an artwork. Heritage professionals, such as restoration experts, are also invited to showcase their craft through workshops and displays, so the general public can learn what it is they do. Forty-seven countries throughout Europe are expected to hold their own Heritage Weekends this year. For more information in French, CLICK HERE.
