French Government protects local heritage
Renaud Donnedieu de Vabres, Minister for culture and communication, has decided to initiate the process of protecting the hotel located at 5 Solferino Street in Paris, related to the memory of General de Gaulle. This protection will cover the building itself, its interior decorations, and furnishing of the General’s office. The furniture of this section, which comprises an office in the style of Louis XVI accompanied by a leather writing pad, an office armchair, two leather easychairs, auxiliary seats, and mural geographical charts, will be also be included. It is indeed in this building that General de Gaulle installed his office during the period 1947 to 1958, after he resigned, on 20 January 1946, from his duties as the President of the provisional government of the French Republic. It is there his personal thoughts developed into political actions before he returned to presidency in 1958 to carry out the constitutional reform. The instruction on the protection process will be continued in such a way as to ensure that the orders relating to the protection of the building and movable objects are given before the end of the year. Today the building of 5 Solferino street shelters the Foundation of Charles de Gaulle, chaired by Yves Guéna. This foundation, recognized for its service to the public by a decree of 22 September 1992, has the role of preserving memory of General de Gaulle, of promoting any research or study on his works and his activity, and of gathering documents and objects related to him.
