Arts Council of Wales fights dismissal

The Arts Council of Wales held an emergency session on the 3rd of January 2006 following the decision of the Assembly Government's Culture Minister to not renew the appointment of Geraint Talfan Davies as chair of the board. The Council has written to the First Minister to express their concerns that: a change of leadership at this critical time could be damaging to the Council; that the adoption of a single criterion for recruiting members has been without consultation, and does not take into account corporate governance requirements; and that there has been a lack of serious dialogue on a proposal to transfer responsibility of some of the Council's largest clients to the Assembly Government. In the letter, Janet Roberts, Vice Chair of the Council, said that the actions “are damaging to the relationship that needs to exist between the Council and the Government”. Davies' term expires on the 31st of March 2006, and there has been controversy over a recent advertisement for the position which ignores detailed selection criteria that had been previously agreed upon.
