Arts Council CD waters musical roots

Beyond its own borders Northern Ireland is not exactly renowned for its musical accomplishments but a new CD entitled ‘New Folk, Roots and Traditional Music from Northern Ireland’ is aiming to raise the profile of some of the country’s best musicians. The CD has been produced by the Arts Council of Northern Ireland and the Northern Ireland Music Industry Commission, and includes tracks laid by some of the biggest names in the Northern Ireland traditional music scene. Featured artists include Cathal Hayden, Henry McCullough, Four Men And A Dog, Field Marshal Montgomery Pipe Band, Méabh O’Hare and Conor Byrne and Brian Houston. Paul Flynn, Traditional Arts Officer at the Arts Council , said, “ Northern Ireland is renowned for its traditional music and has produced some of the finest musicians and singers who have gained recognition at home and abroad. This compilation CD is a free platform for the best of traditional, folk and roots musicians to emerge from this part of Ireland and is a fantastic opportunity to perform to a wider audience. The compilation is both a testament to achievement and an indication of future developments.” The compilation CD also contains interactive features (accessed via computer) such as artist biographies, contact details, and an illustrated history of folk, roots and traditional music from Northern Ireland.
