Scottish Arts Council announces major funding for Glasgow redevelopment

The Scottish Arts Council has announced that it has approved a National Lottery capital award, worth £1.5 million, towards the development of a visual arts centre on Glasgow's King Street. The King Street project, as it is known, is expected to cost around £7 million and is led by Glasgow City Council in partnership with 9 visual arts organisations. The new development will provide a new home for the 9 visual arts organisations and become a centre for the visual arts in Glasgow. Iain Munro, Head of Capital at the Scottish Arts Council, said: ‘One of the greatest strengths of this project is the quality and diversity of the artistic activity produced by these nine organisations and the long-term strategic approach taken by Glasgow City Council in developing this area.' Amanda Catto, Head of Visual Arts at the Scottish Arts Council said, 'This is an exciting new development for the visual arts in Glasgow and Scotland. It will increase the accessibility of the visual arts for local people and support artists working in Scotland. It will also help put Glasgow firmly on the map as an international centre for contemporary visual arts.' Councillor John Lynch, convener of Glasgow City Council's Cultural and Leisure Services committee, said 'This is a key step forward in the development of a unique creative hub in an area of the city which is increasingly being seen as a cultural quarter. We are delighted with the commitment and level of support given to the project by the Scottish Arts Council, providing a tremendous boost for the vibrant visual arts scene in the city.'
