Youth orchestral maneuvers reinstated

After ten years campaigning by the North Wales local education authorities music services, the The North Wales Youth Orchestra (NWYO) has finally been reinstated. The decision follows additional pressure instigated by a music forum facilitated by the Arts Council of Wales, North Wales office. As a result of the decision 84 youths from across North Wales were given expert tuition at a local school before performing Mendelssohn’s Violin Concert with Russian violinist Natasha Korsakova, as well as Sibelius’ fifth Symphony and Mathias’ Celtic Dances during two concerts on the 25th and 26th of August. Course coordinator Aled Marshman said: “North Wales pupils were at a disadvantage getting into the national ensembles because there was no intermediate orchestra for them. This orchestra acts as that important transition between the county orchestras and the national ensembles. “Highly accomplished professional tutors, who were born and bred in North Wales, show the youngsters that musicians from North Wales can go on to be successful nationally and internationally,” he said. The course will now run every year thanks to financial support from The Arts Council of Wales, The William Mathias School Service and six local authorities. For further information, CLICK HERE
