Lottery Boost for Northern Irish Arts
IFACCA/Artshub, 01 August 2005,United Kingdom
Arts in Northern will benefit from the Arts Council of Northern Ireland’s announcement of £1.6 million of funding made available through the National Lottery Fund.
The Breakdown of Lottery funding for the current fiscal year will be as follows:
£1 million is shared between 30 arts organisations across the country, through the Access to the Arts programme, which aims to increase participation in the arts as broadly as possible;
£446,470 has been allocated to 20 arts organisations through the New Work programme for projects that take original art work and disseminates it to audiences throughout Northern Ireland;
21 Primary and Nursery schools will share £164,000 for the Early Years programme.
The total amount of funding available this round is £1,633,427.
Arts Council Chief Executive, Roisín McDonough, said: “The principal aim of our Lottery Fund is to make a real and lasting difference through the arts to people’s lives right across Northern Ireland. We were very impressed with the high standard of applications this year and are confident that the awards will enable arts organisations to achieve exceptional standards of arts provision to all sections of our society.”
The new Early Years programme makes these aims manifest by using arts related projects to encourage the development of problem solving, language and creative skills of children between 3 and 7 years of age. A specific example is the production of a large mosaic for each of three Belfast primary schools whose students will collaborate on the creation of both the large and individual pieces of 3-D clay work.
The largest award, £135,000, has been allocated to POBAL, the umbrella organisation for the Irish speaking community, to produce a ‘roadshow’ showcase of the arts in Irish across Northern Ireland over a three year period.
