National Carnival Arts Strategy for England
Arts Council England has announced the publication of its National Carnival Arts Strategy which sets out how the Arts Council will support the cultural, artistic and professional development of carnival arts over the next two years. The Arts Council hopes that the new strategy will provide the carnival arts sector with the same awareness of and access to funding as other artforms, and stresses that it is important for this document not to be seen as a final product, but rather as a basis for ongoing consultation with government departments, local authorities, the education system, community groups and the wider carnival arts sector. Peter Hewitt, Chief Executive of Arts Council England, said: “I am delighted that we have produced this strategy, working closely, and in consultation, with the carnival sector. The strategy recognises the significant role that carnival plays in our cultural and social calendar, especially its ability to showcase talent and to celebrate the rich and diverse nature of our cultural life.” The national carnival arts strategy aims to set out a framework for the support and development of carnival arts in England and will also serve to stimulate discussion and act as an advocacy tool for the increased recognition of carnival as an artform.
