Welsh local arts expenditure revealed
A new survey conducted by The Arts Council of Wales and the Welsh Local Government Association illuminates the extent, and the reach of partnership funding to support the arts across the region. Twenty-two Welsh authorities were questioned in September 2004 regarding the level of expenditure by their arts and culture department, and details of any related expenditure by other departments within the authority. Eighteen completed survey questionnaires were returned, a response rate of 82%. Peter Tyndall, Chief Executive for the arts development body, discussed the findings, which indicate the 22 authorities spend £36 million each year on providing access to the arts for the communities of Wales. 'It shows that Local Authority support of the arts is fundamental to the arts infrastructure in Wales,' he said. 'This sum is equivalent to the £36 million spent by the Arts Council using funds from the Welsh Assembly Government and the National Lottery.' Local Government Association, Cllr Emlyn Davies (Conwy), said local authorities play a valuable role in supporting and promoting arts and culture. 'This investment helps develop and promote a sense of identity within communities and has a positive impact on the local economy in terms of providing direct employment and encouraging tourism,' the Councillor said. The survey examines the level of expenditure during the 2003/04 financial year, with results suggesting an average expenditure of £1.63m per authority. For further information, CLICK HERE.
