Published, first report into impact of subsidy on independent publishing industry
Arts Council England has published the first ever report – From kitchen table to laptop - into the impact of subsidy on the independent publishing industry. The report is a joint initiative between the Arts Council and the International Centre for Publishing Studies at Oxford Brookes University. Highlights of the report include: - The crucial role played by independent publishers in the development of artists and niche markets. - Underfunding within the independent publishing sector. - Resources available to publishers that may be currently underutlised. The report finds that it is in niche markets – such as new writers, Black and other minority writings, contemporary literature, and translations - that independent publishers have an impact significantly out of proportion to their market size. This phenomenon is recognised as contributing to the UK's reputation as one of the international community's foremost literary producers.
