Scotland launches new international art magazine

Scotland’s new international art magazine, Map, was launched on 1st March and is the result of major research undertaken by the Scottish Arts Council. Evidence showed that there was a need for a new magazine to promote contemporary art originating in Scotland while putting developments in a national and international context. Established with funding from the Scottish Arts Council, Map hopes to build on the successes of Scottish artists within the international contemporary art scene. Published quarterly, the magazine will reflect the work that is being created in Scotland and the ideas and events around the world that influence current art practice. It is designed to appeal to artists, arts professionals and an informed general arts audience in Scotland and beyond. Map's editor, Alice Bain, said: "Based in Scotland, Map has set its sights on the wider world, placing Scottish visual art in a global context. Making connections and journeys with artists, Map will draw together their work and ideas into a snapshot of art activity and exhibitions every quarter, and while tackling cutting edge subjects and stimulating debate, aims to be a good read besides." Graham Berry, Director of the Scottish Arts Council, adds: "Map has arrived at exactly the right time for the thriving visual arts sector and I am sure interest in the publication will extend well beyond those living and working in Scotland. The strength and depth of contemporary practice in Scotland demonstrates a real need for a high quality publication to explore what is happening in the visual arts scene and promote the work of Scotland’s artists internationally."
