Poetry placed firmly on Welsh map
A £5,000 grant from Arts Council Wales will be used to fund the country’s first National Poet. The money has been awarded to Academi, the literature promotion agency for Wales, who will make the appointment. The National Poet is expected to act as a literary ambassador for Wales at home and abroad. As with England’s poet laureate and the Scottish Maker, the National Poet will create new works to enhance and embellish Wales’ milestones and achievements. The appointment will last one year, and languages will alternate. Iestyn Davies, Head of Communications at Arts Council Wales, said “As a country renowned for its literary heritage it is fitting that Wales should have its own National Poet creating new works that celebrate our successes, comment on our failures and raise the profile of Wales through literature.” Academi's aim is to create the role for a poet who will act as a focus for the art of verse throughout the country, basing new work on what they see happening in the political and cultural life of Wales. The National Poet will also take part in readings, workshops, ceremonies and attend official occasions. For further information, CLICK HERE.
