African and diasporic arts celebrated through new partnership
Africa 05 is a partnership between the British Museum, South Bank Centre and Arts Council England, in association with the BBC – offering a broader picture of contemporary African and diasporic arts than has ever been seen in one season. Ten years on from Africa 95 and 20 years on from Live Aid, 2005 sees the publishing of the Africa Commission report and Britain holding both the G8 chair and the European Union presidency. Against this backdrop of momentous political change, Africa 05 presents the diversity of arts, heritage and audiences, and hopes to challenge preconceptions and stimulate new and lasting perspectives on African cultures. Extract: 'Across London throughout 2005, museums, galleries, concert halls and cinemas will reverberate with sights, sounds, colours, stories, art, images, textures, fashion, sculpture, photography, film, debate and discourse that will create one of the most significant events in the capital in years. 'Africa 05 is not just a series of exhibitions and events, it is a watershed moment in the development and promotion of African arts in the UK.'
