Scottish Arts Council launches huge funding initiative

On Monday the Scottish Arts Council unveiled a wide series of initiatives to support the arts in Scotland. Every area of the industry will benefit from the initiatives, which are geared towards encouraging hands-on participation in the arts, supporting the Scotland’s creative industries and ensuring visitors are able to enjoy a wide range of high-quality work. Graham Berry, Director of the Scottish Arts Council welcomed the announcement and added, ‘I’m delighted that we are able to support these initiatives, which are aimed at reinforcing Scotland’s role as an international centre for excellence in all areas of the arts. Each project will contribute something very valuable to the cultural fabric of Scotland and confirms, for me, what an exciting place this country is for both audiences and artists.’ Big winners of the initiative include the Scottish Ballet, in Glasgow, which will receive an additional £100,000 to develop a new repertoire. £100,000 has also been granted for a young people’s reading initiative and for consolidation of the new Centre for the Scottish Children’s Book. Promote YT, the youth theatre network, has received £50,000 to develop training for youth leaders and an annual youth theatre festival; £50,000 has also been set aside for partnership projects with Education bodies, including Learning Teaching Scotland and the Scottish Higher and Further Education Funding Council. Publishing in Scotland has received a £65,000 creative industries award to support company development through ‘programme’ publishing grants. The Edinburgh City of Literature Project has also received £50,000 to significantly extend its partnerships across Scotland; This wide range of initiatives attests to the fact that Arts are alive and well in Scotland, with a populace and government committed to supporting them. The continuing grants and support will make a big difference over the coming years, and ensure that Scotland will remain competitive with every other country in the UK. During 2005-06, the Scottish Arts Council will invest over £74 million, including £20 million of National Lottery funding, in the arts in Scotland.
