Budget Amended To Save French Historical Buildings

The French Minister of culture, Renaud Donnedieu de Vabres has taken action to prevent historical building renovation sites from being closed. Escalating tensions had meant some renovation companies had threatened to close down some construction sites, but the minister and a government team have liaised with the companies involved and have ensured the renovation work will continue. In recent months, the ministry of culture and communications processed the redeployment of 21.8 million euros in payment appropriations, for the restoration of historic buildings. This first measure made it possible to work on the most difficult cases. Besides this redeployment, however, the budget amendment at the end of the year accommodates an additional amount of at least 26 million euros in payment appropriations, bringing the total to 35 million. This supplementary amount will allow the ministry of culture and communication to balance its heritage renovation priorities for the year 2004. Lastly, an increase of 25 Million euros for historic building renovation and upkeep is envisaged at the beginning of budget planning for 2005. On the whole, there is more than 72.8 million euros in additional payment appropriations for 2004 and 2005 which will be granted for the restoration of historic buildings in France.
