Artist Links China Calling For Submission
The British Council and Arts Council England are calling for submissions to their unique Artist Links project. Artist Links is without precedent in the United Kingdom. The project is aimed at increasing cultural exchange between China and Britain with results focused on outcomes rather than audiences. In two years, Artist Links has worked with sixty artists, funding trips, residencies, and project development in China. The program is unique to China – the councils want to satisfy the public’s hunger for information about the country, and the changes currently taking place there. At the core of Artist Links lies the idea of cultural exchange. Artists from both Britain and China have been asked to apply, and joint proposals are encouraged. Funding is for research and development rather than exhibition or performance. The reasoning behind this is consistent with Arts Council England’s stated aim of supporting artists through their creative development. The accent on practice brings a more dialogic element to the program – the link of the title. In fusing individual artistic concerns to an international discourse, Artist Links is promoting subtle, dynamic forms of cultural exchange. Though performance and exhibition are not funded, they usually become part of a project (in both China, and England). This exposes the public to a very personal record of the dialogue between the two cultures. Moreover, the project’s focus on developing artists has an undeniable impact on stylistic concerns. The time artists spend as part of Artist Links influences the way they make and think about art. The submission deadline for this pilot scheme is January 25th, 2005, however the councils are considering expanding Artist Links to other countries at a later date.
