New appointment for French visual arts
The French Ministry for Culture and Communication has appointed Olivier Kaeppelin as its new representative for the visual arts sector. Kaeppelin was put forward for the role by Minister for Culture and Communication, Renaud Donnedieu de Vabres, and given the green light by the entire ministerial council. He replaces Martin Bethenod, who has in turn been appointed Commissioner-General of the International Fair of Contemporary Art (IFCA). Born in 1949 in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil), Kaeppelin holds a BA in Contemporary Art and is a graduate of advanced studies in sociology at the Sorbonne and Paris X Nanterre. He also has a background as an educator, teaching in Paris VIII (Department of Literature) and Paris I (Department of History of Art). Kaeppelin has occupied numerous positions within the Ministry, including art education inspector, artistic creation inspector and Head of Inspection from 1993 to 1999. He joined France-Culture as a Deputy Manager before becoming the Counsellor for the President of Radio-France overseeing the development of cultural policy for the group. The author of many works and articles devoted to art and artists, Kaeppelin was also a commissioner and co-commissioner of several exhibitions and presentations on new French art for the World Fair of Seville, the Médicis Villa, Frac des Pays de la Loire, Biennale of Venice, the Museum of Modern Art of Villeneuve d' Ascq, the Museum of Art Schools of Nantes, of Mulhouse and the Workshops of The Paris Museum of Modern Art.
