Macao campaigns for Intangible Heritage of Humanity candidacy
Addressing UNESCO’s 32nd General Conference, the President of the Macao Cultural Institute, speaking on behalf of the Secretary for Social and Cultural Matters, proposed that Associate Members of the organisation be granted equal rights to Member States in candidacy for Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity status. UNESCO statutes exclude Associate Members (such as Macao) from applications for recognition of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Since it's administration was handed over to China, the Government of Macao Special Administrative Region has dedicated itself to various heritage protective measures. Representatives were however insistent to the international community that further safeguarding is imperative. The President of the Cultural Institute highlighted that the Intangible Cultural Heritage of small communities is especially vulnerable in the current climate of cultural globalisation and that measures for inclusion would contribute towards consolidating the true spirit of cultural diversity.
