Arts Council of Wales looks at sector's long-term sustainability
The Arts Council of Wales (ACW) has launched a £1 million pilot programme to assess the sustainability of arts organisations. The Programme for Sustainable Arts Organisations will initially involve six arts companies and aims to look at what issues impact on sustainability. An external adviser will work with the organisations’ board and management, followed by an in-depth sustainability audit to be carried out by a management consultant. After the completion of this process, awards of between £50,000 and £100,000 will be made available to implement the findings of the audit. If the bid for funding is successful, the grants may also be used for purposes consistent with the programme, for example, eliminating historic debt. Announcing the initiative yesterday, ACW Chief Executive Peter Tyndall said the programme was not about providing new funds to organisations. ‘The programme is definitely not about providing extra project or revenue funding,’ he said. ‘It clearly is about addressing the present and future needs of the arts in Wales.’ ‘The Programme for Sustainable Arts Organisations aims to enable applicants to assess their level of sustainability,’ he continued. ‘It will help them identify ways to make improvements and the changes that are necessary to address their “sustainability deficit” – the gap between an organisation keeping its head above water and truly building a secure foundation for long-term development.'
